CURTISS OC-1 FALCON, A-7945

This aircraft landed twice at Tucson. Both times it was flown by Major Ross E. Rowell, USMC. His first visit was solo on Tuesday, November 19, 1929. He noted in the Register "In ballast," a remark that becomes clear from the brief article below. He was eastbound from San Diego, CA to El Paso, TX. On Wednesday he turned around and flew back to San Diego carrying as passenger Captain Shearer. Below is the airplane they flew, A-7945. The photograph is from the Aircraft Yearbook, 1928, page 124.

This round trip was clearly documented in the Bureau of Aeronautics Newsletter for December 4, 1929. Below is that citation.

It is fairly clear that Rowell's comment in the Register, "In ballast," was synonymous with "sandbagged" in this instance. He meant that he was alone, and, with some aircraft that would have meant the addition of a sandbag or two in the passenger or cargo compartment to maintain the correct weight and balance envelope for safe flight. Below, courtesy of the San Diego Aerospace Museum Flickr Stream (SDAM), is an undated photograph of the airplane. In this photograph, the observer/gunner rear cockpit appears to be covered over or removed.

Joe Baugher's site identifies A-7945-7948 as Curtiss F8C-1 Falcons.
