Winners' Viewpoints: The Great 1927 Trans-Pacific Dole Race is available at the link. What was it like to fly from Oakland to Honolulu in a single-engine plane during August 1927? Was the 25,000 dollar prize worth it? Did the resulting fame balance the risk? For the first time ever, this book presents the pilot and navigator's stories written by them within days of their record-setting adventure. Pilot Art Goebel and navigator William V. Davis, Jr. take us with them on the Woolaroc, their orange and blue Travel Air monoplane (NX869) as they enter the hazardous world of Golden Age trans-oceanic air racing.

CURTISS F6C-1 HAWK A-6969

A-6969 represents the first model in the famous line of Curtiss "Hawk" fighter aircraft. It has a sister aircraft on this website, A-6972, which started life as a dash-1 model, but was modified with an "experimental radiator" and became a dash-3 model. The Hawks were used by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps between 1925 and 1932.

Below is a video of A-6969 that I took for you in August 2007 at the National Museum of Naval Aviation, NAS Pensacola Florida.

The F6C-1's had 400HP Curtiss D-12 engines installed. You can see the 24 exhaust stacks emerging from the sides of the engine cowl. Additional technical facts are cited in the film narration.

Derived from the Curtiss seaplanes that won many of the air races of the early 1920s, when introduced to the fleet, the Hawk was considered the finest fighter airplane then flying.

A-6969 landed at Tucson once on February 20, 1928 11:45 AM. It was flown on this winter Monday morning by 1st Lt. T.J. Cushman, USMC. He arrived from San Diego, CA. We can picture him warming himself in the hangar; perhaps having a cup of coffee. He departed at 1:00 PM eastbound to Quantico, VA.
