SAN GABRIEL, MISSION AIRPORT
|
|
In 1933, Mission Airport was described as, "...located
in the heart of the Los Angeles Basin withing a few minutes
of metropolitan Los Angeles, offering the aviator, ship-owner
and those of the industry a location from which to centralize
their effort -- every transportation need available -- Southern
Pacific Main Line, Pacific Electric interurban, bus and boulevards.
Manufacturers, distributors and ship owners are invited to
investigate."
Mission Airport was located at Mission Road and Delmar Avenue
in San Gabriel, CA about 10 miles east of Los Angeles. It
was rectangular area of 162 acres with three oiled runways
(hard to see three runways on the photo). There were modern
hotels and restaurants in town. Photo, above, by V.V. Stockton
in reference at left.
Telephone and weather reports were available on the field.
Fuel, oil, hangars and mechanics (daytime only) were available.
