This book describes and illustrates with black & white photographs the majority of military aircraft that landed at the Davis-Monthan Airfield between 1925 and 1936. TRAVEL AIR "SPEED WING" NX6269

NX6269 landed at Tucson Sunday, September 9, 1928. If was flown solo by W.H. Emery, Jr. Based at Bradford, PA, he arrived at Tucson from Lordsburg, NM on his way westward to Los Angeles, CA. He was competing in the National Air Races (NAR), which were held at Los Angeles between September 8-16 that year.

This airplane is the only prototype of the Travel Air "speed wing' version of the DW-4000, S/N 708. It was manufactured by the Travel Air Mfg. Co. (founders Walter Beech, Clyde Cessna, Lloyd Stearman). It is pictured below, in Whicita, KS ca. 1929, courtesy of the San Diego Aerospace Museum (SDAM).

Emery and 6269 were successful in the NAR in 1928, placing third in the transcontinental Class A Race from New York to Los Angeles (2,939 miles). According to the Aircraft Yearbook for 1929, he placed third overall with a time of 28:48:28. He won $1,000 for his effort. He was also successful the following year, placing 4th in the Portland, OR to Cleveland, OH Derby during the 1929 NAR. He won $450.
