GROUP PHOTOS OF MILITARY

AVIATORS AND AIRCRAFT

WORKING ON THIS

WHY THIS PAGE? Every now and then I am presented with photographs of groups of people or aircraft, in this case military. There are multiple names of people &/or multiple aircraft that are relevant to the Davis-Monthan Airfield Register. Where do I place these photographs? On whose page?

In most cases, since there are numerous people or airplanes in a row, I exhibit the photographs vertically so as not to miniaturize them so you can't see the principals.

03/05/10 The photograph below is shared with us by friend of dmairfield.org, John Underwood. It shows several Register pilots, as indicated on the annotation found on the back of this image (see below).

Below, annotation on the back of the photograph above. I cropped the caption and enhanced the contrast of this image in PhotoShop for better legibility. We find Register pilots Ralph Royce, H.H. Arnold, Carl Spatz (he didn't change the spelling of his name until 1938, so it was "Spatz" when this photograph was taken), B.Q. Jones and B.D. Foulois. Does anyone RECOGNIZE any of the others.

The photograph celebrates aerial tactical maneuvers in 1931, in which over 600 aircraft were involved. They were the most extensive maneuvers to-date.

03/11/10 Below, from John Underwood, a photograph of a group of Army pilots who flew from New York to Nome, AK in 1920. Although this feat was outside the date range of our Davis-Monthan Register, some of the pilots went on to sign the Register later in their careers. This same photograph, from a different source, is exhibited at the Klein Archive on this site.

Below, the caption on the back of this photograph. The flight to Nome was led by Captain St. Clair Streett. The fleet departed on July 15, 1920 and reached Nome on August 24th. According to the annotation on the back of the photograph, below, Register pilot Streett is at left. Other Register pilots are Clarence E. Crumrine (not Cromrie as spelled below), Clifford Nutt and Erik Nelson. This article from the Wrangell (AK) Sentinel details the flight.
