G.R. Acheson landed twice at Tucson. His first landing was Wednesday, September 5, 1928 at 9:05AM. He carried Ssgt. Casis in the Curtiss A-3 Falcon, 28-101. They remained on the ground 40 minutes. Based at Ft. Crockett, TX, they were westbound from El Paso, TX to San Diego, CA.

His second landing was solo on Wednesday, January 28, 1931. Based this time at Brooks Field, San Antonio, TX, he was eastbound from Rockwell Field, San Diego to El Paso. He flew the Douglas BT-2B, 31-89.

Acheson was born at Lewiston, ME in January 21, 1904. His official Air Force biography is at the link. He attended the University of Maine and enlisted in the Army as a private Feb. 7, 1925. He learned to fly and was commissioned second lieutenant in the Air Reserve Feb. 28, 1927. In late 1927, he became squadron maintenance inspector of the 8th Attack Squadron at Fort Crockett and later adjutant of the 3rd Attack Group. This roughly places him at Tucson during this assignment.

His second visit at Tucson was during his assignment as a flying instructor at the Brooks Field Primary Flying School, which he had assumed in September, 1929. Please refer to his biography linked above for a summary of his career, culminating with his promotion to major general on October 27, 1954.

Acheson retired from active duty with the Air Force in 1959. He died August 17, 1989. There are several photographs in addition to the one above, left, at Findagrave. His wife was Virginia D. Acheson (1917 - 1992).
