W.L. McKittrick, a Marine Corps pilot, landed twice at Tucson, during what seemed to be a quick round-trip cross-country from his base at Quantico, VA to San Diego, CA. His first signature in the Register appeared on page 14 on Tuesday, December 14, 1926 at 4:30PM. He was westbound from El Paso, TX. He was solo in the Boeing FB-1 he identified as A-6890. He remained in Tucson overnight, departing to San Diego the next day at 12:45PM. No reason was given for his trip.

His second visit at Tucson was a week later on Tuesday, December 22, 1926 at 10:45AM. This time he was solo in the Boeing O-2B A-6917. He noted in the remarks column of the Register, "Going home." He departed at 1:10PM for El Paso. San Diego to El Paso would be a good day's flying for an open cockpit airplane in 1926.

There is not a lot of information online about McKittrick. The Army and Navy Register for December 14, 1918 lists him (and a large group of others) as a corporal who had completed a course in the Marine officer training camp with eligibility for promotion to 2nd lieutenant. He cited his rank as lieutenant when he signed the Register in 1926.

I have no information about his duties during the 1930s. Most of the online information has to do with his WWII activities. On May 12, 1943, he assumed command of the 4th Marine Base Defense Aircraft Wing for the Hawaiian Islands. He received two Legion of Merit awards during WWII for, "... exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States in the Pacific Theater of Operations...." The first award was for September 15, 1943 - February 20, 1944. The second was for the period June 26 through August 1 1944. Finally, from the U.S. Marine Corps History Division chronology for 1984, on March 27, 1984 "Major General William L. McKittrick, USMC (Retired), died in Pensacola, Florida at the age of 87. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1918 and served in the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. General McKittrick was awarded a Legion of Merit for directing air strikes against the enemy at Rabaul during World War II. As air defense commander at Saipan, he was awarded his second Legion of Merit. The general retired from the Marine Corps in 1951."
