SWALLOW Model 8 NC706
IT LASTED ABOUT A YEAR & CHANGE
This airplane is a Swallow model 8 (S/N 830/828; ATC # unidentified)
manufactured mid-1927 by the Swallow Airplane Company, Wichita,
KS. It left the factory with a Curtiss OX-5 engine
(S/N 4380 Willeys-Morrow) of 90 HP. It was a three-place
airplane, weighing 2,000 pounds.
It sold on July 8, 1927 to Springfield Air Lines, Inc.,
Springfield, MA. Two months later, On September 8th,
Springfield sold it to Warner-Mannis Air Lines, Malone, NY
for $2,700. Warner must have gotten into some straits
over the next year, because they requested cancellation of
the registration on August 6, 1928, “as ship is being
sold by sheriff to satisfy a claim.” NC706 was
then transferred to Ernest B. Hannam of Syracuse, NY with
no bill of sale.
It sold on August 23rd to W. Parker Runyon, Jr., of New York
City and Perth Amboy, NJ. It is during his ownership
that we find NC706 at Tucson. It landed twice, on
September 9th and October 11, 1928. Both times it was
flown solo by Warren B. Smith who gave his home base as Perth
Amboy, NJ. On September 9th he was westbound from Lordsburg,
NM to Los
Angeles, CA. On October 11th he was eastbound
from Yuma, AZ to El Paso, TX. He remained overnight
on this occasion, departing at 12:30 PM on the 12th.
According to the NASM record, a week later, on October 17,
1928, the airplane suffered an accident at New Market, NJ. The
pilot, Parker Runyon (student permit #8980), caused damage
to three wings, the propeller, one wheel, the engine mount,
crankcase and landing gear. There is no record of injuries
to the pilot or repairs to the airplane. Runyon cancelled
the registration on October 17th.
In November 1928 Runyon sold the airplane to Richard Newhouse,
Rocky Hill, NJ. Newhouse renewed the registration,
but then cancelled it again February 7, 1929. No reason
was given. No further information.
