STINSON SM-6000 B NC10845
TAMPICO-BOUND
This airplane is a Stinson SM-6000B (S/N 5044; ATC #420)
manufactured in June 1931 by Stinson Aircraft Corporation,
Wayne, MI. It came from the factory with three Lycoming
R-680 engines (S/N L 567, R 499, C 505) of 215 HP each. It
was an eleven-place airplane weighing 8,600 pounds gross.
It was purchased on June 20, 1931 by Century Pacific Lines,
Ltd., Grand Central Air Terminal, Glendale,
CA. We
find the airplane in Tucson flown by Frank Glennan on June
26, 1931. He carried two passengers, George Cox and
W.B. Jessup. They were westbound from Tulsa,
OK to
Los Angeles, CA.
Century Pacific sold NC10845 to American Airways, Inc.,
Chicago, IL on March 31, 1932. This sale must have
been part of Century’s dispersal of resources, since
a sister ship NC10843 was sold to American on the same date. American
flew it as an eight-place passenger/mail carrier until 1933. It
was reported in dead storage in Tulsa, OK as of May 8, 1934.
A year later, on May 16, 1935, NC10845 was sold to Appalachian
Flying Service, Inc., Jackson City, TN and reconverted to
an eleven-place passenger ship. Appalachian flew it
for four years and sold it to Southern Airlines, Greenville,
SC on April 20, 1939. It sold twice more, finally being
sold to Blevins Aircraft Corp, Hapeville, GA who overhauled
and re-covered it before selling it to Transportes Aereos
Tampico, Tampico, Mexico.
A letter of enquiry went out about the airplane on March
25, 1948. The response stated that the airplane was
sold into Mexico on April 8, 1942. No further information.
